Everyone loves sweets and treats, and Halloween is a great holiday to try some new recipes. This year, go beyond your traditional fare and come up with some ghoulishly awesome Halloween desserts to enjoy after dinner. Remember that they don’t have to be extremely high fat or loaded with calories to be amazingly delicious.
#1: Treat Yourself to Enrobed Apples
Take caramel apples to new heights by enrobing them in all sorts of delightful sweets. First, choose very large apples. Usually, Honeycrisp or Granny Smith varieties are best, depending on whether you prefer a sweeter or tarter apple. Then, purchase a variety of coatings to drape over the apples, such as caramel, chocolate or candy coating. Place the apples on wax paper, melt the coatings and then enrobe the apples a little bit at a time. Start with the caramel, then allow it to cool. Drizzle melted chocolate on it. While the chocolate is still warm, you can add crushed nuts, sprinkles or tiny marshmallows.
Because your apple will be coated, it should be fairly large. Serve the apple in slices, rather than on a stick like a traditional candy-coated apple.

#2: Make a Gingerbread Haunted House
Are you someone who never seems to have time during the holidays to make a gingerbread house? Have some fun this October and make a gingerbread haunted house instead! You’ll need to either make or buy gingerbread to construct the main structure, or you can use graham crackers held together with stiff icing that’s allowed to dry.
After the house has been built, you can attach all those wonderful add-ons to the sides, roof and around it. Be creative! It’s a wickedly fun way to spend a lovely afternoon, especially with kiddos who are looking for something to do.
Of course, remember that your haunted house is actually a dessert, so be prepared to demolish it the best way: with your fingers!
#3: Make Halloween-Inspired Baked Alaska
Baked Alaska is a fun treat that not a lot of cooks try, but they should! Essentially, it’s ice cream that’s covered in a whipped meringue topping made of egg whites, vanilla, and sugar. The ice cream creation is quickly baked in the oven, which hardens the meringue but doesn’t cause the super-frozen ice cream to melt.
You can add a bit of Halloween by making sure you choose orange and chocolate ice cream, and/or color the meringue topping with a bit of orange food dye. Voila! You have Basked Alaska — spooky style!
Treats definitely are on the menu at Halloween, so allow your imagination to take charge and have a blast trying specialty desserts during the month of October. Shop our Halloween gift baskets.
