When is Purim 2025? Important Purim dates

  |

Purim is a traditional Jewish holiday that holds a special place in the hearts of those who celebrate it. Each year, Purim is a time for festivities, celebration, reflection, and unity within Jewish communities and families. Purim is a celebration and commemoration of the survival of the Jewish people who were marked for death in the 5th century. The story, narrated in the Book of Esther, recounts Queen Esther's bravery in saving her people from Haman's plot to annihilate the Jews.

When is Purim 2025?

Purim in 2025 will begin at sundown on Thursday, March 13th , and will end at nightfall on Friday, March 14th. Unlike many holidays that follow the Gregorian calendar, Purim follows the Jewish lunar calendar. This ensures that Purim, which falls on the 14th day of the Hebrew month of Adar, aligns with the events that unfolded in the story of Esther.

Is Purim the same day every year?

No, Purim is not observed and celebrated on the same day every year on the Gregorian calendar. This is because Purim does not follow the secular Gregorian calendar. Instead, it follows the Jewish calendar and falls in the month of Adar. Purim's date changes annually and can fall anywhere from late February to late March on the Gregorian calendar.

While Purim is not observed on the same day according to the Gregorian calendar each year, it is celebrated on the same day, the 14th of Adar, each year according to the Jewish calendar.

Why does Purim change every year?

The shifting date of Purim is tied to the Jewish calendar's reliance on lunar months. The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar, meaning it accounts for both the phases of the moon and the solar year. Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar each year.

When did Purim start being celebrated?

It is believed that the earliest observance of Purim dates back to the 5th century BC. Purim commemorates and celebrates the survival of the Jewish people in the 5th Century BC who were marked for death by their Persian rulers.

During Purim, Jewish communities around the world will come together to commemorate Purim with laughter, traditional feasting, and gratitude for the resilience of their ancestors. This special holiday serves as a reminder of the adaptability and enduring spirit of a tradition rooted in historical triumphs.

How to celebrate Purim

The celebration involves several customs and traditions designed to promote joy, community, and remembrance. Participants often dress in costume, adding a playful and festive atmosphere to the occasion. The giving of mishloach manot, sending food gifts to friends and family, fosters community spirit and friendship, while matanot la'evyonim, giving charity to the poor, ensures everyone can partake in the joy of the holiday.
