Chocolate and fall go together — like peanut butter and jelly, puppies and children, jumping and leaf piles… you get the idea.
This autumn, spend a little time in the kitchen whipping up some great chocolate-infused and chocolate-inspired creations. There are tons of ways to incorporate chocolate into your life and make it a little happier as you celebrate this busy, fun time of the year.
Fun Foods to Make With Chocolate
It doesn’t have to take a lot of effort to make delectable chocolate treats, either. Take a look at these ideas:
Chocolate-covered pretzels. This is a great project for kids to do alongside adults because you don’t need to spend much time cooking anything. Get some generously-sized pretzels, such as pretzel rods, and lay them on wax paper. Get high-quality chocolate and melt it in a double boiler on the stovetop. If you don’t have a double boiler, melt it very, very slowly in the microwave on 50% or less intensity. Chocolate should never be allowed to boil, or it will start to lose its flavor and integrity.
When the chocolate is melted, kids can dip the pretzels into the mixture, and then replace them on the wax paper to harden. Sprinkles and other add-ins are fun additions to make before the chocolate hardens. By the way, teachers adore getting these as special gifts throughout the holidays, too!
Chocolate-drizzled fruits. Want to make a treat that has a little higher nutritional value, but is similar to chocolate-covered pretzels? Try chocolate-drizzled fruits instead. Melt the high-quality chocolate the same way as described above, and then drizzle it over whole or cut-up fruits. Although we’ve all tried chocolate-drizzled apples and strawberries, why not taste test other varieties of fruit, such as pears, bananas, mango slices and pineapple?
Chocolate bark and other candies. As a final note, melted chocolate can be mixed with tons of ingredients, such as whole nuts, pieces of nuts, dried fruits, candies, marshmallows and more. After mixing everything with the melted warm chocolate, place the mixture on a waxed paper coated cookie sheet to harden. Then, break it into pieces and store in a cool place in an airtight container. Watch out, though — this will go fast, so you’ll want to make enough to last at least a few days!
Chocolate hot drinks. Chocolate and cocoa powders can be added to a variety of drinks to make chocolate-flavored treats. Try hot coffee with a little melted chocolate or make a rich hot cocoa with actual melted chocolate and heavy cream. Love chai tea? Chocolate and chai can be a sweet combination! Don’t forget that chocolate doesn’t have to be the overwhelming flavor in your hot drink. Even a little cocoa powder can be enough to tempt the taste buds.
Chocolate chip pumpkin bread. Pumpkin is everywhere in the fall, so why not make a little pumpkin bread with a scattering of chocolate chips? It’s quick to whip together, and kids of all ages adore munching on it. A bonus is that pumpkin is extremely nutritious, so it’s a dessert you can feel better about serving!
